Hand Knitting with Traditional Knitting Needles
A quiet invitation to slow down, learn needle-based hand knitting, and rediscover craft through rhythm and care
Teaching, practising, and sharing hand knitting as a mindful human craft
Handknit India is a learning and community platform dedicated to traditional hand knitting done with knitting needles. We focus on teaching and encouraging needle-based hand knitting — a slow, skill-based craft that is distinct from finger knitting and machine knitting.
Through beginner guidance, shared knitting projects, learning resources, and community circles, we invite people to experience hand knitting as a thoughtful, humane practice. Our aim is not speed or production, but patience, rhythm, and the quiet satisfaction of making with one’s hands.
OUR STORY
Where we began. What we learned.
Handknit India began 25 years ago, as a profit-making business as IDI Exporters, to support women displaced by the conflict in Kashmir. Many knew how to knit, and we helped transform that basic skill into world-class mastery — Aran, Fair Isle, design development, and natural-fibre yarns. Over time, we grew into a collective of 1,500 women across 25 clusters, working with global designers and yarn companies and building deep technical expertise.
Through this journey, we learned that skill is only the surface. Underneath every stitch lies rhythm, focus, pride, and a quiet form of healing.
❝ This wisdom guides us now into our future where the craft becomes a spiritual & wellbeing practice.❞

Lifts the heart
Making something slowly brings joy, meaning, and confidence.
THE VISION
Where the craft becomes ‘Sadhna’: A way to come home to yourself.
We want to share the skills, techniques, and knowledge that we have gathered over decades with others for experiencing the deeply fulfilling practice of knitting. A cap knitted for your baby; a scarf made for a friend are not ordinary objects. They are blessed because they are made with attention, and love.
We do not ask the next generation to knit for livelihood. We invite them to knit for themselves —for calm, for clarity, for joy.
Knitting is not only craft.
It is a wellbeing ritual. A meditative rhythm that slows the breath and steadies the mind.
